In the year 1859, before approximately 150 years, Frenchmen and Sarden fought against the young austrian emperor Franz Josef l, in order to drive them our from upper Italy. The horrers witnessed by Dunant after the battle of Solferiono on 24 June 1859 and his ensuing humanitarian appeal are the origin of the Red Cross/ Red Cresent Movement, wich today comprises 186 National Societies with millons of members, as well as the two international bodies – the ICRC and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Cresent Societies.
